It’s National Meadows Day in the UK— where I currently am— and it feels important to share something I only discovered today through Leif Bersweden’s Instagram page. Wild meadows— although this might feel counterintuitive—actually need cut back in order to maintain species richness. This needs done at the right time of year— end of summer— and the cuttings need removed. By doing so, you reduce the soil nutrients down meaning that species such as nettles or others that are good at taking up nutrients don’t thrive. This clearing, this cutting back, allows the smaller species to be on a level playing field. I’m not sure what it is about this fact that I’ve found so deeply soothing; something about what it speaks to about self, trauma and healing I think.
